1.) Why does Viola want to join Olivia's household as it says on pg. 10?
2.)How does Viola know Orsino...enough to love him? (pg. 22)
3.)Why doesn't Orsino get some courage and just profess his love for her by himself?
4.)I'm confused about the conversation between Maria and the fool and then with Olivia, what are they talking about? (pgs. 27-31)
5.)Why didn't Viola just pass on Orsinos' message to Olivia in front of her attendants and Maria? Why did it have to be so private?
6.)Why, after criticizing her, does Olivia begin to love "Cesario"? (pg. 43)

6. Olivia begins to fall in love with Cesario because Cesario is the one person who seems to not be interested in her. This makes Olivia want ot pursue him. (I.iv.212,213)
ReplyDeleteI too was perplexed and somewhat irritated that Orsino proved himself incapable to profess his love for Olivia. If he can ramble for hours about her pulchritude and devotion to her, why doesn't he express his sentiments? Interestingly, he does not even love Olivia. Love encompasses care, concern, and performing monumental acts for that "special someone." He simply is obsessed with her beauty. It seems odd to say "simply" but love involves more than appreciation of appearance. It also includes respect and affection. Orsino does not feel affection towards Olivia, because he does not care for her. He looks upon Olivia as a goddess to place upon a pedestal. He comprehends not Olivia's emotions nor her personality. She is a doll for Orsino, one who cannot walk or talk, but only smile and raise or lower her eyes.
